Windows 10 Support Ending Next Month! Here’s What It Means For You

September 01, 2025

Important Notice: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Although your PC will continue to function after this date, Microsoft will stop providing essential services like security patches and technical assistance that keep your system safe and reliable.

Why Business Owners Must Act Now

  • Heightened Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your system becomes increasingly exposed to viruses, malware, and cyberattacks. Protecting your business data means upgrading to a supported Windows version is critical.
  • Software Compatibility Challenges: Many applications are optimized for the latest operating systems. After Windows 10 support ends, you may experience glitches or lose access to key programs essential for your operations.
  • Regulatory Compliance Risks: Operating on an outdated OS can lead to compliance violations, especially if you handle sensitive data or follow strict industry regulations. Staying updated helps you avoid costly fines and legal complications.

Your Upgrade Options Explained

Microsoft recommends upgrading to the newest Windows version before the deadline. However, not all Windows 10 PCs meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11, and attempting an incompatible upgrade will result in errors.

If your current device isn't compatible with Windows 11, consider these alternatives:

  • Purchase a new PC that supports Windows 11
  • Enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) for temporary protection
  • Switch to a Linux-based operating system
  • Ignore the deadline and risk your business security (not recommended!)

Before proceeding with any option, ensure you back up all important data to prevent loss during the transition.

Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10

If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, Microsoft offers ESU to extend security support for one year beyond the October 2025 cutoff. Keep in mind, this is a short-term fix, not a permanent solution.

To access ESU, you can pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points to register. Alternatively, a free option exists if you enable Windows Backup to sync your settings and files to OneDrive. Note that OneDrive provides 5 GB of free storage, so additional space may be required depending on your file volume.

Don't delay—registration for ESU must be completed before October 14 to qualify.
