How Will the Update Transform Excel?
For the longest time, each Excel cell could only hold one value. If you put multiple users in the same space, for example, the program sees the entry as a single piece of text. Working with each person separately often requires a different approach.
The Excel cells upgrade tackles this limitation by:
- Keeping multiple values together and treating each one individually
- Using HAS, HASALL, FLATTEN, and HASANY to reshape or examine arrays
- Filtering a list by a particular item without creating extra rows
- Storing dynamic arrays directly inside cells
- Preserving nested arrays of complex spreadsheet formulas
What Can Your Business Do With Smarter Cells?
With more information packed into individual cells, you can transform many parts of your core operations. Consider the following.
Keep Shared Tasks Easier To Track
You can list several project owners in one cell while keeping each name as a separate value. With fewer extra columns for separating responsibilities, you get a cleaner, much more efficient layout.
Refine Customer Data
One buyer may have several product interests, while a survey respondent might select multiple answers. Lists keep every choice tied to the appropriate record without combining them into one text string. Your team can filter for a particular response across the worksheet and identify customers who share that preference.
Check Skills Without a Maze of Columns
Why not put certifications and completed courses together in one place to streamline the employee vetting process? Functions such as HAS and HASALL also provide a way to check for one credential or an entire required set.
Give Complex Calculations Less Room To Sprawl
Since arrays no longer have to occupy several neighboring cells, single-cell data can help make each worksheet compact if you don’t need outputs displayed separately.
The Upgrade Still Has Some Boundaries
Microsoft is rolling out the update to Beta Channel users on Windows 2610 (Build 20520.20000) and Mac 16.114 (Build 26092111) or newer releases. These preview features are still being tested and refined, so some may be unavailable.
Take note of the following limitations as well:
- Conditional formatting: It won’t inspect array contents without a formula.
- Data validation: Lists and arrays can’t serve as dropdown items.
- Charts: Array contents won’t expand into distinct data points.
- PivotTables: They can’t read array values as source data.
- Power Query: It can’t load or output array-valued columns.
- Find & Replace: You can’t replace singular items inside arrays and lists.
Put Your Most Awkward Spreadsheet to the Test
The best use for the Excel cells upgrade may already be sitting in your company’s files. Find a workbook filled with extra columns, manual sorting, or other time-consuming workarounds. Once these features mature, use that familiar headache as your first testing ground and see whether smarter cells create a simpler workflow.
